Gunung Datuk Camping Trip

I was so excited to have my first camping in life.

So sad, first time in this age.

Hey… not this age ok? One year younger! It happened last year but I blog it this year.

Any different?

Don just redeemed a new tent from his Citibank credit card so we decided to stay a night inside the tent. Initially we thought it was pretty cool to setup the tent in his small compound but considering that his dad might not like it so change our target to Gunung Datuk.

Hey… I should have taken a picture of the tent… it’s a pretty cool tent… (or maybe a picture of the Citibank card, no Citibank card no tent. Arrrgg… maybe not. I hate Citibank as it terminated my card only because I owed them RM23.50 for few months. I thought they should be more than happy that they were earning my interests!)

We were fully prepared a day before the journey. We have done enough research, bought all the necessary camping gears, and marinated the chicken! We were going to have GRILL OREGANO CHICKEN for the camp.

Too bad I hadn’t developed interest in blogging last year so I didn’t take photos of the food that we prepared :-(

Our list of Items:

  1. Tent
  2. Sleeping bags
  3. Sleeping pads
  4. Marinated chicken
  5. Red bean soup
  6. White Rice (we even cooked rice)
  7. Cabbage
  8. Blackcurrent Vodka
  9. Bread and Butter
  10. Cooker
  11. Fuel
  12. Torch Light
  13. 5 bottles of 1.5 littre water!! Freaking heavy.

Gunung Datuk:

Gunung = Mountain
Datuk = Grandpa
Height: 870m/2900ft
Location: Rembau, Negeri Sembilan

It was about 1.5 hours drive from KL to Gunung Datuk.

To Get There (Source from mcswen):

Gunung Datuk is about 1½ hours drive from KL. To go there, get onto the North-South Expressway and head South for Rembau, Negeri Sembilan. Take Exit 223 (Pedas/Linggi). Immediately after the toll, take a left turn at the T-junction.

Go all the way along the road until you reach a round-about. If you follow the signboards along the way, you will be directed to take the 12 o’clock exit to Pedas town.

However, a much shorter and quicker route is to take the 3-o’clock exit (you’ll by-pass Pedas). Continue along the road until you come to the traffic lights at the end of the road. Take a right turn. Keep going forward (you will soon pass another set of traffic lights) until you see a signboad indicating a left turn to Gunung Datuk. Take the left turn and move on for about About 4km. There will be a junction to the left. This road goes through a rubber estate. Not long along the road, there is a fork; take the left turn. Go all the way and you’ll come to Gunung Datuk’s base camp.

Here it is, Mount Grandpa ~~~

We bumped into Buffalo Auntie Anne and Buffalo Uncle Julian with their family, how sweet ~~

Here we are, grandpa!! I am so ready to start the hiking now. With only some food, cookers, sleeping bags, sleeping pads, and my clothes in my backpack, I believe I can conquer the mountain … With 7.5 litters of water + a heavy tent in Don’s backpack, I pity him… I will try to slow down my speed so Don won’t feel bad that he might be left behind… my poor boy… (actually I was the one left behind )

It was quite challenging for the first 30 mins hike… so STEEP.. my legs were tired already after 30 minutes. This is the first part of the journey that is about 70 degrees hike. The heavy backpack adds more pressure to my legs that I start to move slow. Don keep motivating me to move faster without resting too much as that might use up even more energy…

So I keep moving and moving and moving… Hey, look! What’s this little tiny thing…

We touch it and it turns into a ball…

I think it helps to escape from us easily by rolling down hill without spending much energy. Brilliant! I wish I don’t have to rely much on my legs also. I’m currently practicing hard in Yoga and hopefully one day I manage to master in one of the Yoga skills ~ FLOAT and FLY. So I can save my energy.

The second part of the hike is after 2 huts which is an easier trail compare to the first part. After 2 hours hike, we finally reached a plain campsite. And thanks god, as Don’s wish, no one is there to share the campsite with us!! I straightaway throw my heavy backpack onto the ground and get some good rest.

Hey, not the time to rest yet.. we still need to climb up to the summit of the mountain, which is naturally stacked up with boulders!

Take a look of these amazing boulders.

There are ladders and ropes to assist us to climb up to the peak. I am now in good spirits again to get ready for the final climb to the top of the hill…

Well… I was stunned and stuck here for about 20 seconds to figure out how to reach to the ladder~~

The rock where I stood on was very slanting that I couldn’t make a decision whetherto use the rope to assist me or to find other way. Don told me not to rely on the rope, so I have to slowly “crawl” to the ladder with the hands holding tight on the edge of the rock to support my body. Syiok anyway…

Here where I reached the first ladder ~~

There are few more boulders to climb in order to reach to the summit. It’s indeed a great experience to climb the boulders and I wonder where did all these boulders come from.

Finally here we are, the best part of the trek, the peak that offers 360 degrees view ~~

We can even see the Seremban town and as far as the Straits of Malacca. Sitting on the summit with the cooling wind blowing in our faces is a truly refreshing experience. The only regretful is that we missed the sunset. We were busy setting up the tent and grilling our oregano chicken while the sun was setting. We just tried to avoid doing all these in dark.

The night is cool and breezy.
The stars are bright.
The moon is round.
The trees are green.
The ground is damp.
The tent is new.
And We Got Nothing To Do.

A peaceful night to finally have my mind completely empty.
A perfect time to think about philosophy of life.
A rare opportunity to ponder my future.
A silent moment to……………………………..

hit the hay.

p.s. I know what are in your mind now. You are wondering why I didn’t take any picture of the tent and the cooked food, right? You are probably thinking that my post is about camping but there is none of the picture related to camping, right?

Okay… I was regret to death enough. I have no explanation at all HOW COULD I EVER DO THAT to not even snapping a single photo of the NEW TENT and the GRILLED OREGANO CHICKEN!!
