This is an old post written in 2009 that had been saved as Draft but had never been published in my travel blog. I decided to publish it today as the story is significant to me and I hope it will make a difference to the world, even if it’s just a trivial difference.

It was a big surprise to receive a Christmas card from my son. Don and I have been writing several letters to him but we could hardly receive any reply until this Christmas, we finally got the Christmas card from him, with his own drawing!

World Vision

Yeah, we got a son. His name is Natthapong, a 10 year-old kid. We sponsored him via World Vision early this year. I have been wanting to sponsor a child since few years ago until this year when I told Don about it, he was fast looking for the information from World Vision and we immediately took an action and got one of our 2008 resolutions accomplished.

My sponsored son lives in Kapur, southern Thailand, which lies next to the southern tip of Myanmar and is approximately five hours drive from Bangkok. This community is recovering from the devastating effects of the tsunami. This area is among the least developed in the country, so recovery is likely to be slow and difficult. Many of the villagers are in debt. They are repaying loans that were taken out prior to the tsunam, as well as post-tsunami loans for rebuilding and survuval. Close to 50% of the villagers have little understanding od hygiene and the fundamentals of HIV/AIDS. Almost half the population does not continue their education to secondary level.

That’s why World Vision partners the local communities to work on the project to improve their lifes. The key interventions include clean water, education, health care, food & agriculture and economic development. Some, such as clean water, may begin almost immediately. Others, like education, may take years to forge long-lasting, self-sustaining improvements.

With our sponsorship, which is only RM50 per month, we will be able to help to build crucial cornerstones that allow a community to rise above poverty and children to pursue their dreams.

I hope I can sponsor more kids in the future and meet them personally and see the work done by World Vision for myself.

If Rm50 is not too much for you, why not have a look at their website?
